University of Ghana honours Kofi Annan’s memory with remembrance service
The University of Ghana on Friday, September 7, held a memorial service to mark the passing of its former Chancellor and former United Nations (UN) General Secretary, Kofi Annan who passed away in Bern, Switzerland on Saturday, August 18, 2018.
Tributes were read by Principal Officers of the University and dignitaries from selected institutions and associations.
Mr. Annan, who was Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 2008, ended his tenure at the end of July 2018.
At the recent investiture ceremony of Mr. Annan's successor, President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described Mr. Kofi Annan as "one of Ghana’s most illustrious sons under whose stewardship the University attained the rank as one of the best universities in West Africa".
His role in the University’s development is evident in areas of agricultural research and ICT development where he helped to attract funding sources to boost purses that built the school.
The former Chancellor will be remembered as a man of principle and gentle disposition and one whose humility preceded him in all endeavours.
The solemn service featured a choral performance by the Mfantsipim Old Boys’ Association and a tribute by the same association, fondly recalling his athletic days in school and his famous habit of nicknaming everyone he met.
A former vice-chancellor of University of Ghana, Prof. Ivan Addae Mensah, in his tribute to the lost gem, reminded the attendants to uphold Kofi Annan’s ‘lighter’ side as much as his serious side.
“Usually, when people reach such august and elevated positions, we lesser mortals are tempted to think that it is all serious work for them and no lighter side to their lives and achievements,” he said.
He wanted everyone present to remember Kofi Annan’s ‘humanness’ in spite of the great feats he attained in his lifetime.
The mortal remains of the late diplomat will be laid in state on Tuesday, 11th September at the State House, where the public will be allowed to file past it.
