Communications minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and Kwabena Agyepong
Former General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has urged the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to lead Ghanaians to ensure a reduction in the DSTV subscription fee.
Speaking on Peace FM, monitored by GhanaWeb, on September 11, 2024, the trained civil engineer and sports enthusiast, said Ghanaians can no longer continue to pay a high subscription for DSTV when Nigerians and South Africans are paying less for the same services.
"... Now I am ageing, if I am home and my party is in power, I can cross my legs and relax. What is important to me is that I will be able to find money to pay my DSTV subscription. The subscription is expensive; the Ministry of Communication should do something about it. Nigeria is paying less than us, and South Africa is paying less than us.
"The Ministry should be on the side of Ghanaians. Data we buy in Ghana is more expensive than in America. My sister, Ursula, the telcos are cheating us. You must do something about it. Kwabena Agyepong said.
Currently, the prices of DSTV packages in Ghana are as follows:
Premium: GH₵750
Compact Plus: GH₵495
Compact: GH₵330
Family: GH₵165
Access: GH₵85
Padi: GH₵50
In June 2024, MultiChoice Nigeria, the owner of DSTV and GOTV, announced a reduction in subscription fees for its services in Nigeria. This decision followed a court ruling that the company’s price hike was unjustified.
The price reduction affected all DStv and GOtv packages, with prices returning to their previous rates.
The court ruling also directed MultiChoice to offer a month-free subscription to affected customers.
