Axim (W/R), Oct. 14, GNA - The Volta River Authority (VRA) has taken over the management of the Effasu Barge Power Project, initiated by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, Minister of Energy, announced this during a press briefing at Axim after visiting the project site as part of his three-day tour of the Western Region. Mr Freddie Blay, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Ellembele, accompanied the Energy Minister.
Dr Nduom said the change in the management of the project followed the restructuring of the GNPC and the determination of his Ministry to start the generation of power with the barge using diesel fuel for the meantime until gas becomes available for the project. He said the barge power plant would serve as an emergency facility to supplement the national power supply.
Dr Nduom said the Ministry would move the barge, which is presently at the Sekondi Naval Base to Effasu by December this year, to enable it start production by the first quarter of next year. He said his Ministry had earmarked 400 million cedis as compensation for farmers whose farms and crops were destroyed during the construction of facilities for the barge and an additional 600 million cedis as compensation to workers of GNPC who were affected by the restructuring of the corporation.
