Veep shares update on Constitution Review Committee recommendations

Vice President,Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, says the government is carefully reviewing the Constitution Review Committee’s recommendations and will publish a position paper outlining its response to the proposed reforms.

She disclosed this at a ceremony to commemorate the 150th anniversary celebration of the Supreme Court on July 28, 2026.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang described constitutional reform as an opportunity to strengthen public confidence and democratic governance.

“After months of extensive consultations with citizens, institutions and stakeholders across the country, the Committee has submitted its report to His Excellency the President. On his behalf, I wish to acknowledge the enormous intellectual labour and patriotic service that went into that important national assignment.

“I’m pleased to state that the government is carefully considering the Committee's recommendations. And in keeping with our commitment to openness and constitutional governance, we’ll issue a position paper setting out the government's considered position,” she stated.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang said constitutional review goes beyond simply changing legal provisions, describing it as “a national exercise in reflection” on whether institutions continue to serve the aspirations of citizens and respond to the needs of an evolving society.

The vice president further noted that the process would be approached in a spirit of partnership, with the aim of ensuring that constitutional reforms “strengthen public confidence, deepen democratic accountability, and preserve the delicate balance upon which our constitutional order rests".

Cabinet has concluded deliberations on the government’s position paper on the Constitution Review Committee’s report, paving the way for the formal communication of its stance on the proposed reforms.

Key recommendations under review include extending the presidential term from four to five years, separating ministerial appointments from parliamentary membership, establishing an independent Emoluments Commission, and reforming the appointment process for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
