Voters register: NDC’s allegations anchored on 'misleading' conspiracies – Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MP for Effutu, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for making “speculative and unsubstantiated” allegations against the Electoral Commission (EC) over the compilation of a new voters' register.

The NDC on Thursday held a press conference during which the party’s chairman accused the EC and National Identification Authority (NIA) of coniving with each other to deny some Ghanaians their voting rights.

Ofosu Ampofo asserted that the two institutions are doing the bidding of the incumbent party and have crafted plans to rig the 2020 elections.

“The President seeing defeat staring glaringly at him, he is in conjunction with the Jean Mensa-led EC and the Ken Attafuah-led NIA desperately scheming to rig the 2020 elections and hold on to power at all cost," said the NDC. "Not even the unusual circumstances we find ourselves in which requires that we pull together for our collective survival as a nation are enough to deter the actors of this plot from their ungodly act.”

Responding, Afenyo-Markin who was a guest on Joy News’ Newsfile program intimated that the concerns raised by the NDC are conspiracies which they have so far failed to establish.

“The NDC could not establish conspiracy. If you know you are going to lose an election, be matured enough as a political party and accept the verdict, wait for another day and do your homework well. Mac Manu said that nothing of the NDC has changed. What has changed for the NPP to conspire to rig? You’ve not established that. Now you speculate that some areas have recorded lower percentages in terms of registration and you juxtapose that against the fact that areas that have done well in terms of registration are NPP strongholds," the Effutu MP said.

He added: “If that’s the case then what becomes of the Eastern Region which is our stronghold. If that’s the argument you are making then I’m sorry. It’s a political statement they want to make but they must focus on their party. I am saying that if the NDC tells Ghanaians whatever concerns they [have] with the EC is anchored on conspiracy, that is misleading. They’ve not established that conspiracy”.

With about six months to the December general elections there is no national consensus about the register for the elections.
