Sam George spoke at the Transatlantic Summit in New York in 2023
An old video of Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has resurfaced online, showing him debating on LGBTQ+ issues.
The video, which dates back to 2023, captured the Ningo-Prampram MP speaking at an international summit where he strongly articulated his views on family values, human rights, and gender identity.
'President Mahama will know no peace' - Old video of Sam George on LGBTQ saga 'haunts' him
In the video, Sam George introduced his personal beliefs and background to frame his stance on the matter.
“As a natural-born man, a charismatic Christian, a husband of one woman, a father of three children, and an elected member of Ghana's Parliament, I hold the role of the family extremely sacred,” he said.
He further explained that his position is grounded in both Ghana’s legal framework and international human rights instruments.
“I believe that the right to found a family and determine same is a right that accrues to everyone within the context and spirit of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and several other recognized international treaties,” he explained.
Addressing global conversations on LGBTQ+ rights, the minister argued that there is a growing push to redefine family structures.
“At a time in our world where supposedly progressive forces are agitating for a redefinition of the core principles of what a family is… genuinely progressive voices… must rise in defense of family, its values, and protections,” he argued.
Sam George also drew a distinction between sex and gender, insisting that the two concepts are often conflated in global discourse.
“There is a distinct difference between sex and gender or gender identity… Sex is a biological construct… Sex is binary. You’re either male or female,” he emphasised.
Sam George added that while gender may vary across societies, it lacks universal consistency.
The minister further argued that international human rights frameworks, particularly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), are explicit in their wording.
“It emphasizes in Article 2… there shall be no distinctions made based on sex. Yes, it says sex, not gender or gender identity,” he stated.
“The UDHR in Article 16.1… [states] that the rights to marry and found a family shall be between men and women of full age… Yes, it says men and women, not men and men or women and women,” he added.
Highlighting African values, Sam George linked his position to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, stressing that, “As Africans, the role of the family is cardinal to our society… Article 18… recognizes the family as society’s natural unit and basis.”
Sam George has become the centre of discussions on X recently following the resurfacing of a series of old videos linked to his strong stance on the LGBTQ+ bill.
It may be recalled that Sam George, a leading advocate of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has consistently been vocal about the legislation.
In a number of videos circulating on X on March 31, 2026, the minister is seen making bold promises and remarks about how deeply committed he is to the bill and his determination to ensure its passage.
In one of the videos, he is also seen criticising the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration for failing to pass the bill, insisting that he would ensure the John Dramani Mahama-led government would “know no peace” until the bill becomes law.
In a recent development that has sparked outrage on X, President John Dramani Mahama, during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on March 30, 2026, stated that Ghana continues to face pressing challenges, including access to education, healthcare, jobs, and other basic needs.
Following the president’s remarks, some netizens have taken to social media to criticise Sam George over what they describe as his failure to fulfill promises made to Ghanaians.
According to some users in a series of posts, the minister’s previous criticisms of the NPP government were merely political.
Meanwhile, Samuel Nartey George, in a post responding to the backlash, stated that he is not perturbed by what he described as an “agenda” being pushed by some individuals.
Why Sam George is trending on X
According to him, he has paid his dues to his political party, and the criticisms online is the least of his concerns.
“Today, I see old videos being sliced and reposted to push an agenda. I smile and say, ‘I have paid my dues.’ You may think you are cooking, but with each video you post, you reveal the stripes on my shoulders as I fought to bring my party, the NDC, back to power. I stood for something I believed in, the return of JM,” he said.
Sam George flew all the way to the “land of the Whiteman” to go debate them on LGBTQ and why Africa and Ghana would not accept h0m0sexuality! This is arguably the boldest thing an African legislator has ever done! pic.twitter.com/rZVvHzaP35
