“When it comes to corruption, I don’t think President Rawlings should be the best judge especially when we are comparing him to President Kufuor” said spokesman for President John Agyekum Kufuor, Frank Agyekum.
Frank Agyekum was reacting to a corruption allegation leveled against ex-President Kufuor by former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Former President Rawlings has accused ex-President Kufuor of monopolizing corruption during his tenure in office.
During an interview with journalists after he signed a book of condolence opened at the residence of the South African High Commissioner in Ghana in honour of the memory of the late South African President, Nelson Mandela, former President Rawlings said President Kufuor superintended over corruption in his administration to the extent that America had to send CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) to warn him (Prez Kufuor).
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Mr Agyekum described the allegation as false, adding, ‘I wonder where President Rawlings is coming from’.
“I don’t know where all these things are coming from and how is he the best judge… as if everything about him is correct and everything about somebody else is wrong. The things he is saying are not true. If you pick some of the issues he has raised; as far as we are concerned, Prez Kufuor has done a lot in terms of trying to curb corruption. It was during his (Kufuor) time that many laws on anti-corruption were passed in Ghana and so I don’t see what really he means”.
According to him, the US would not have given Ghana funds if they saw so much corruption in the erstwhile Kufuor administration.
“There is no truth in what he has said. As far as he (Rawlings) is concerned everybody is corrupt minus himself and perhaps his wife. He claimed not to have furniture in his room but he was able to send all his children abroad for their education…by the time he finished office, had built mansions but Prez Kufuor built his own house before he came into office. There is no proof of those things, but I think we should move on” he added
Meanwhile, Mr Agyekum has indicated that ex-President Kufuor is going to ignore him (Rawlings) because they are ‘a bit fed up’ of him making such comments.
