We cannot shed blood because Charlotte Osei, deputies have been sacked - NPP MP

The Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, Mr Anthony Effah, has lambasted commentators who have threatened to make Ghana ungovernable for President Nana Akufo-Addo over the removal of the EC boss and her two deputies.

The legislator who was contributing on the issue said, we cannot be encouraging bloodshed nor should someone suggest bloodshed because the president has acted constitutionally. The removal of the EC boss and her deputies was not influenced by the president, he acted in accordance with the law and took a decision. ‘’Nobody has organized a coup to remove the EC bosses.

They were removed in accordance with the law,’’ he said. He recounted the bad blood between the commissioners and the negative outcomes it brought at the Electoral Commission. ‘’We should stop the political commentaries and also stop calling for blood over the issues,’’ he appealed.

According to him, the dismissal of the three does not bring activities at the commission to a halt. The EC is an institution and not an individual.’’ Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) Charlotte Osei and two of her deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, have been removed from office by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

A statement signed by Information Minister Mustapha Hamid stated that the removal of the EC chair and her deputies comes on the back of recommendations from a committee set up to investigate the three on allegations brought against them by some staff of the Commission.

According to the statement on Thursday, the committee recommended their removal pursuant to Article 146(1) of the constitution on the basis of stated “misbehaviour” and “incompetence”. The president has therefore asked the three to exit office “with immediate effect”.



The NDC has threatened to organize demonstrations in protest against the dismissal and have since called on Nana Addo to reverse the action. The MP used the opportunity to advise new appointees to the office to be serious, and work in the interest of the state to ensure discipline and effectiveness.
