We have an excellent ticket - President Akufo-Addo 'kills' rumours as he openly endorses NAPO

In his first public statement on the choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed total support for the two and conveyed his utter conviction of the NPP’s chances of winning the elections.

Speculation had been rife that President Akufo-Addo was opposed to the idea of NAPO as the partner for Dr. Bawumia for the 2024 elections.

The report further stated that President Akufo-Addo grudgingly endorsed the choice of Bawumia during a meeting in which he disclosed his reservations about the decision.

But in his first public comment on the matter, an elated President Akufo-Addo told GhanaWeb that Bawumia and NAPO present the NPP’s chance of retaining power.

According to him, Bawumia and NAPO form a solid partnership that fills him with great excitement and confidence that come January 7, 2025, he would be handing over to Bawumia and not Mahama.

“The National Council has just endorsed the nomination of Matthew Opoku Prempeh to be the running mate of Dr. Bawumia. The NPP has an excellent ticket, and we are going to win with this ticket. The feeling is good, and they make a very good pair,” he said.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Thursday, July 4, 2024, received the unanimous approval of the National Council of the NPP to serve as the running mate of Dr. Bawumia.

The meeting, which is part of the party’s constitution, was attended by the bigwigs of the party who endorsed NAPO as the man to help Bawumia win the 2024 elections.

The General Secretary of the NPP, who described Dr. Opoku Prempeh as “charismatic” and “bold,” said he deserves the position.

“I am happy to report that after the necessary consideration, the NC unanimously endorsed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of Dr. Bawumia,” General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, is quoted to have said at a press conference on Thursday.

“He is a charismatic, bold leader who excelled at the Ministry of Education and at Energy," he said.
