We haven’t approved ‘dumsor’ vigil on our campus - UG

Authorities at the University of Ghana, Legon , have stated emphatically that they have not approved, neither are they considering, any request for a vigil to be held at the school’s premises.

Leader of the heavily publicised celebrity vigil against the erratic power supply in the country, Yvonne Nelson, has announced that the May 16 protest will be taking place at the campus of the University of Ghana.

But a statement issued by the management of the university Thursday said it has not received any request for such an event on any of its campuses. “It has come to the notice of management of the University of Ghana that there are media publication of a vigil and or processing, purportedly being organised by a group of persons at the stadium ground of the university of Ghana on May 16,2015.

“The university categorically and emphatically states in no uncertain terms that it is not aware of, neither has it granted nor is it in the process of granting permission to any person or group of persons seeking to organise or hold any such procession or vigil or within any of its campuses.

“The University hereby demands an immediate cessation of all mention of its name or campuses in relation or in connection with any such activity,” the statement noted.

The actress and her colleagues have secured a police permit in accordance with the Public Order Act, to hold a vigil in protest of the ceaseless power crisis in Ghana.

Nelson, who started the social media hashtag #Dumsormuststop, has been collecting heartfelt stories of how the situation has affected individual Ghanaians.

One of the stories she posted on her Facebook wall today,Thursday was from a young man who claimed his mother died in surgery because the light went off while she was being operated on.
