We’ll not rest until we find an engineering solution to the persistent flooding if I become president - Mahama

Recent heavy downpours in Accra and other parts of Ghana have led to widespread destruction of property and, tragically, the loss of a young schoolboy's life.

These events have highlighted the government's failure to effectively manage and prevent flooding, sparking deep concern about the absence of a comprehensive flood prevention and management plan.

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the main National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed his dismay over the situation in a Facebook post.

He criticised the current administration's handling of flood prevention measures, despite the significant funds purportedly spent on such efforts.

“Protecting the lives and properties of our people should be a top priority for a government. The current administration has failed in this regard,” Mr. Mahama wrote.

The government claims to have spent USD200 million on the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development Programme (GARID).

However, the impact of this substantial investment remains unseen, as many areas that were previously unaffected by flooding are now inundated with even minimal rainfall. Additionally, Parliament was recently recalled to approve another USD150 million for the same GARID project.

Mr. Mahama outlined his commitment to resolving the persistent flooding issues if given the opportunity to lead the country again.

“Given the opportunity to lead our beloved country again, a new NDC government under my leadership will not rest until we find an engineering solution to the persistent flooding and implement an effective prevention and management plan,” he pledged.

Mr. Mahama emphasised a multifaceted approach to flood prevention, including investing in sustainable drainage systems, clearing structures from waterways, proper waste management, and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains.

“Our commitment to this cause is unwavering, and we are determined to bring about the change our nation desperately needs,” he affirmed.

The NDC flagbearer called for unity among Ghanaians to build a safer and more resilient nation.

“We cannot afford to continue risking the lives and livelihoods of our people. It is time for real change and real solutions. Let us, as Ghanaians, as a community, unite and work together to build a safer and more resilient Ghana,” Mr. Mahama urged.

Mr. Mahama concluded by stressing the importance of collective effort in addressing the issue.

“Your voice and action are not just important; they are crucial in this endeavour as we work towards building the Ghana we want together,” he said.
