The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has drawn the ire of Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, over his ‘coup’ comments.
Speaking to supporters of the NDC in the Okaikwei North Constituency as part of his ongoing campaign in the Greater Accra Region, Mahama said the level of graft witnessed under the current administration would have resulted in a military takeover if the same happened under an NDC government.
“I am saying this; if this level of corruption and bribery were happening under an NDC government, by now soldiers would have overthrown our government.
“I tell you, the corruption and thievery happening under the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government, if it were to happen under an NDC government, the government would be overthrown,” he added.
Reacting to Mahama’s comments on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, Henry Nana Boakye, affectionately known as Nana B, expressed his disgust, stating that it was disappointing for someone of Mahama's stature to make such remarks, emphasizing that Mahama must face consequences for his words.
According to him, the effects associated with a military coup are not something to be joked about or discussed lightly without due consideration.
“He [Mahama] must be punished for that for even as a former president like him to call for a coup d’etat because he disagrees with the current government. He even said pastors, imams and chiefs are hypocrites. Why will you brand someone as a hypocrite when they choose to show gratitude to Dr Bawumia for building a central mosque for them?
“Why would he even joke with making ‘coup’ comments? Some of us we heard about the unpleasant things that happened and even those who lived through the military era are still scarred. As a former president, he shouldn’t be making such comments; instead, he should be the one disciplining his subordinates who make those statements. It is very unfortunate,” he said.
