The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture, and Religious Affairs, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, has given assurances that he will lead the committee to attain its full mandate and the potential of its members within the lifetime of the current 9th Parliament.
Speaking to the media after the inaugural meeting of the committee on Friday, March 14, 2025, the Member of Parliament for Offinso North assured that the committee will deliver on its oversight mandate in ensuring the development of Ghana within the areas of chieftaincy, religion, and culture.
“We are happy that the Parliament of Ghana, in its own wisdom and in the new Standing Orders that have been agreed on, has created this specialised committee to make sure that we pay particular attention to chieftaincy issues. We know it is very sensitive; it’s silent, but it has a huge role to play in our national development. So, we are excited that this committee is not going to be one of the quiet ones or the dormant ones.
“We are saying that we are here, not only to support the oversight functions of Parliament, but also to contribute meaningfully and significantly to the development of Ghana because it is disheartening to see young ones travel out of the country just to go and look for a sustainable livelihood, or sometimes issues that have to do with religion, culture, and chieftaincy affairs tend to lead to the death of Ghanaians. All of us in the committee are proud to be members of the committee, and we pray that at the end of four years there will be a good return on investment or good feedback from the people of Ghana,” the chairman added.
Dr Asamoah emphasised the significance of protecting and promoting Ghana’s culture, noting that several developed countries have attained greater heights by selling their cultural identities to the world.
The 17-member committee bears various responsibilities, including reviewing matters pertaining to culture, religion, and chieftaincy affairs, investigating the activities and administration of relevant ministries, departments, and agencies, and conducting inquiries that may extend to legislative proposals.
