The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has reacted to claims by renowned private legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory that he is related to former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Thaddeus Sory claimed that the family ties between the two played a key role in the petition filed by his client for her removal.

“That is his (Afenyo-Markin) sister; the removed Chief Justice is his sister; they come from the same place. When her father died, the Minority Leader hosted her visitors, and people who were there called me,” he stated in an interview with KSM on November 24, 2025.

When asked about this on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme by veteran broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi, the Minority Leader did not give a direct response.

He said that the Supreme Court judge he shares a closer relationship with is the current Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

“My Lord Baffoe-Bonnie is very close. My Lord Baffoe-Bonnie and I are very close. He presides over cases that I have been involved in… Out of all the judges at the Supreme Court, if you are looking for the one I am closer to, it is Baffoe-Bonnie,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu, pointed out that his close relation with Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has not had any bearing on cases he has handled, saying, “He has not presided over any of the cases I won.”

“The principle is that a relationship with a judge does not guarantee success. We are friends with judges at the Supreme Court, High Court, Appeals Court — we are relations, we are family, we are a fraternity,” he explained.

Afenyo-Markin rubbished the claim that he hosted visitors of the sacked Chief Justice during her father’s funeral.
