The President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has arrived at the Jubilee House to officially kickstart the process of transitioning Ghana into a new government.
Following the declaration of the 2024 presidential results by the Electoral Commission, the presidency announced an invitation by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the president-elect for the official commencement of the transition process.
Upon receiving the president-elect and his vice president-elect, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, President Akufo-Addo was quick to extend congratulations to the incoming president and his vice while acknowledging their victory in the 2024 election.
“Mr. President, congratulations. It was a well-fought fight,” he told Mr. Mahama.
To the incoming vice president, President Akufo-Addo said: “Historic lady, congratulations. Well done,” acknowledging her record as the first female vice president-elect of Ghana.
Ahead of the meeting on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, former President Mahama, in accordance with the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (ACT 845), announced a ten-member transition team who will be representing him in the transition process.
The process provided for in law is to ensure a seamless handover of power to the incoming administration of John Dramani Mahama, who will be sworn in as President of Ghana on January 7, 2024.
In the 2024 presidential race, former President Mahama, who was the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, won the race according to the results declared by the Electoral Commission. He beat 12 other candidates with 56.55% of the total valid votes.
His closest contender, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party, obtained 41.61% of the total valid votes cast.
Running mate of the NPP, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), stated that although the NPP lost the election, the Ashanti Region performed well, achieving a 65% voter turnout.
