Who told you the president asked OSP to resign? - Akufo-Addo’s lawyer 'tackles' Martin Kpebu

Kow Essuman, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's lawyer, has chided private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, regarding assertions about the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.

Essuman has challenged Kpebu's allegations that Akufo-Addo requested the OSP's resignation months ago, demanding evidence from the lawyer to substantiate such claims.

The president's lawyer emphasized that it reflects poorly on Kpebu as a legal professional to speculate and tarnish reputations without substantial proof.

In a social media post, Essuman urged Kpebu to disclose the name of the presidency insider who allegedly informed him (Kpebu) of Akufo-Addo's request for Agyebeng's resignation.

“I really hope that my learned friend, Martin Kpebu, did not make this statement. But in the event that my hope is dashed and he actually made this statement, then I dare him to name his supposed source at the Presidency that provided him with this false information. He should provide evidence of this allegation.

“Given his standing as a lawyer, it is simply not enough for him to say, 'I have my sources at the Presidency.' He should provide cogent evidence to support this allegation rather than putting out speculations and conjectures,” he wrote on X.

Essuman's remarks were in response to Kpebu's comments about Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, which were:

"Martin Amidu's departure provided President Akufo-Addo an opportunity to push out Kissi Agyebeng. Akufo-Addo had requested Kissi's resignation months ago. My presidency contacts informed me that Akufo-Addo asked Kissi to resign, but Kissi refused to leave.

"Akufo-Addo fears that Kissi's slight independence and assertiveness mean he might prosecute the president and his appointees if he remains in office."

Additionally, a JoyNews report stated that President Akufo-Addo has submitted a petition to the Chief Justice seeking Kissi Agyebeng's removal as Special Prosecutor.

The petition, dated April 30, 2024, was delivered to the president by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu and passed on to Justice Gertrude Torkonoo on May 6, 2024.

As per Article 146 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice is evaluating if there's enough preliminary evidence to form a committee to consider Agyebeng's possible impeachment.
