Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, has described former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the person who is well suited to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

According to him, Bawumia has unmatched knowledge of the party, as well as national exposure.

“If there is anybody aged or positioned to lead the New Patriotic Party, it is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. That should not be in doubt, and at the end of the congress or primaries, we will be around this table again to discuss that victory.

“Amongst all of them (aspirants), nobody knows the deep center of the party in each constituency nationwide better than him. Even though many would like to treat him as a newcomer in NPP politics, since his appointment as running mate in 2007, he has combed every sector of this country; every constituency," he stated in a interview on Channel One TV and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

Suhuyini further touched on Bawumia's familiarity with the 16 regions of Ghana, stating that it is because of his extensive campaigns.

“He knows the NPP even in Garu Tempane in the Upper East Region. He knows the NPP in the North East Region because he’s been doing it for more than 16 years, first as running mate and subsequently as flagbearer. So, he can sit in Accra and tell you what is happening in the Eastern Region, certain constituencies, because he’s been in touch with that party for that long.

"If there is anybody equipped with knowledge and experience of the party and can speak to the party’s internal realities in every constituency, it is Dr Bawumia," he noted.

Why Dr Bawumia continues to receive strong backing from NPP MPs

The party has fixed its presidential primary for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The aspirants for the party's flagbearer position are former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
