Why Tesa Dam area has been marked for demolitions

The Presidency has announced plans to demolish illegal structures around the Tesa Dam, located adjacent to the East Legon Boundary Road in the Greater Accra Region.

The decision follows an inspection that uncovered widespread encroachment and sanitation challenges threatening the water body.

In a post shared on social media on July 7, 2026, the Presidency said the inspection team found that the size of the dam had been significantly reduced due to encroachment.

The team also observed that some individuals had constructed illegal retaining walls within the area, while nearby sections had been occupied by densely populated slum settlements made up largely of wooden structures.

According to the Presidency, these settlements pose serious health and sanitation risks.

“Some individuals have constructed illegal retaining walls within the area, and these structures have been marked for demolition. The team also identified a densely populated slum settlement near the dam, comprising largely wooden structures. The settlement was found to pose serious health and sanitation concerns,” the post stated.

The Presidency said the affected structures would be demolished as part of efforts to restore the dam's capacity, improve sanitation, and reduce the risk of future flooding.
