The spokesperson for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has hinted at plans for the party to boycott the 2024 presidential debate slated for October and November 2024 by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

According to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, team Bawumia will only participate in the debate if the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, participates.

He explained that there would be no debate if the NDC flagbearer fails to show up, even though over 19 presidential candidates have filed to contest the 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on September 13, 2024, he stated, “You can’t debate yourself if the opposition leader doesn’t make himself available. Then I don’t know whether there is actually a debate in this election…that is why usually in these debates we have the leading candidates. And so, we are expecting the leading candidates to be the ones participating in this debate.

“I think that to be fair to the people of Ghana, what the voters are looking forward to is the debate between the two leading candidates in this election. If the leading opposition party is not at the debate, then there is no debate. We can’t go into an election with a 19-man debate,” he said.

Meanwhile, the NDC has already stated that Mahama will never debate Dr. Bawumia in any presidential election.

On the other hand, in a statement, the IEA has released the schedule for its highly anticipated presidential and vice-presidential debates in the lead-up to the December 7 elections.
