Deputy Attorney General Godfred Dame has signalled government’s commitment to retrieving money wrongly paid to businessman Alfred Woyome.

According to him, time was running out for the embattled businessman who will soon have no choice but to pay the GHC51 million.

He made these remarks after the Court presided over by Justice A. Benin dismissed Woyome’s application for a stay of proceeding.

He described the application as a deliberate attempt to delay payment of the Judgement Debt.

The Attorney General was scheduled to orally examine Alfred Woyome on Thursday 29th June 2017 but that did not happen as Counsel for the embattled businessman filed a stay of proceedings seeking to prevent the AG from orally examining him.

However, in a judgement read out in court on Tuesday 4th July, presiding Judge, Justice A. Benin described the application as unmeritorious and without basis.

He explained that Counsel for the applicant failed to buttress the application with tangible reasons for which reason it should be upheld.

Godfred Dame was pleased with the judgement and viewed it as a giant step to collecting the GHC51 million due the country.

“The fact that you have filed an application against an order of the court which you disagree with does not entitle you to a stay of prosecution or stay of execution. As you would observe the court was of the view that the application was totally baseless and without any merit at all” he explained.

He was of the view that “the dismissal was in order. It only shows that all these attempts by Woyome was with the view to avoiding the judgement of the court but clearly the day of reckoning will come and time will catch up with him and he will have no excuse but to pay back the money”.

The Deputy Attorney General dismissed the excuse presented by Ken Anku, Counsel for Alfred Woyome that the businessman is sick and has been advised to rest for two weeks emphasising that “today he came to court with a medical excuse indicating that he was not well. I believe that it’s all an attempt to dodge but clearly, he cannot dodge forever”.

He revealed that “we will attach all the shares that he has in various companies, we will also go after all the property that he has and ultimately, the judgement will be satisfied”

The court set Monday, July 24 as the new day for the Attorney General to orally examine the Alfred Woyome.
