Ya-Na?s Burial Postponed

Mon, 7 Nov 2005 Source: --

The burial of the later Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II to which the Andani Royal Family agreed last week, has been postponed. The acting overseer of the area, Kuga-Na Abdulai Brahimah, has decided to postpone the burial ceremony until further notice, citing insecurity concerns.

The Kuga-Na said he based his decision on the inability of the security forces in Yendi to enforce the ban on traditional drumming and dancing in the area during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration to mark the end of Ramadan.

Na Brahimah announced his decision to newsmen shortly after a closed-door meeting with the members of the Yendi District Security Committee (DISEC) at Yendi on Saturday. He referred to an incident during the Eid-Ul Fitr, when a group of young men and women flouted the ban on the traditional drumming and dancing in Yendi.

The Kuga-Na said that he could not understand why both the District and Regional Security Committees could not prevent the group from undertaking their action in spite of the numerous reminders and warnings by the Regional Security Committee through various FM stations in the Tamale metropolis against traditional drumming and dancing before the burial of the Ya-Na.

He said that what was most worrying and shocking was that the heavy presence of the security personnel did not deter the group from violating the ban. The Kuga-Na expressed regret that the security personnel supposed to enforce compliance with the bank could not disperse the crowd but stood by apparently helpless.
