Year of Return: Why African Americans are coming to Ghana in 2019

The decision of the President Akufo-Addo-led government to declare the year 2019 as the Year of Return has received worldwide acclamation and support.

An increasing number of African Americans have visited the country in a bid to achieve specific objectives.

For some, it is a time to reconnect with their roots and learn details about African history firsthand.

For others, it is an opportunity to educate themselves on all that transpired about 400 years when Africans were transported via ships to America and Europe.

The year 2019 has witnessed the largest influx of African Americans to Ghana, per public details available.

Prominent figures such as comedian and television host Steve Harvey, actors Samuel Jackson and Danny Glover, and basketball player, Angel McCoughtry.

Visits by the African Americans to Ghana were not simply for the fanfare. Jackson is in the process of shooting a documentary titled Enslaved, which would retell the story of African slaves who were sent overseas.

Glover met with the cast and crew of the 1996 movie, Deadly Voyage, and they had a lovely photo together.

Harvey is in the process of producing the African version of his popular television show, Family Feud, in Ghana and South Africa McCoughtry has already held a basketball clinic and was present at a gala organized by the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP)
