Some young men in Ada in the Greater Accra Region were Sunday mesmerised by the evergreen attractiveness of Ghana’s former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
The men could not hide their feelings for the 67-year-old gender activist-cum-politician when she roamed some streets of Ada to canvass for votes for the party she founded, the National Democratic Party [NDP].
Although Mrs Rawlings was in Ada to join the chiefs and people of the area to celebrate their annual Asafotufiam festival, she deemed the occasion a perfect one to solicit for votes in this year’s general elections.
While she and her entourage were acknowledging cheers and support on the streets, an elated man approached Mrs Rawlings’ vehicle and shouted: “I will vote for you okay, you are my taste! Yeah, Nana oooo Nana…I love you!” as he blew the former first lady a kiss.
Another man, a photographer, also told Mrs Rawlings in Twi: “You’re beautiful…that’s it” and went ahead to assure the former first lady of his vote.
Mrs Rawlings was filled with joy by the words of the men as she laughed and wave in an apparent acknowledgement. Another young man walking by the roadside on seeing her shouted: “Nana Konadu!” as he waved at the former first lady who also laughed and said: “Even children call me as if I’m their classmate”.
Mrs Rawlings is making his second attempt at Ghana’s presidency after the Electoral Commission disqualified her in 2012 for failing to satisfy all the requirements to be able to contest as a candidate.
