Therefore for commercial drivers to say they are charging 20% on their current transport fares is so outrageous and they must be stopped in their tracks. I cannot fathom the rationale for this levy besides additional taxation. Is it a levy to encourage a shift towards EVs in Ghana? What is the existing infrastructure to support EV use, in terms of charging points along our major highways? Are owners of EVs also going to pay? In essence the point I make is that there needs to be a more holistic approach to this matter right from a clarity of policy direction and addressing specificities such as duties at ports for vehicle imports (EVs against combustion engines), levies on fuel at the pumps, and also how different vehicles are treated within the tax regime of the country and the infrastructure to support EVs if that is what the policy direction is seeking to go.

Ghanaians will not hesitate to pay these taxes if that could stop the country from going to the world bank , the IMF or others international borrowers with their strings attached . Yet the government apart from making life difficult for Ghanaians with their external borrowing does not care to further squeeze its citizens by imposing biting taxes on the people. Taxes which end up in the pockets of politicians. Why impose emission taxes when vehicles have to go through inspections yearly which attract a fee . Vehicle inspections include emissions and to impose taxes on emissions implies taxing twice for the same thing, yet Ghanaians cannot speak against this .
