The Asantehene is completely distorting history. In 1810 the Asantehene Kwame Osei attacked and conquered the Fantes. He said he is as big as the largest fish in the sea, Bonsu, and renamed himself Kwame Osei Bonsu. He captured the Elmia Castle and would have taken the castle to Kumasi if Instead he demanded an annuity al rent of £80 from the Dutch who occupied the Elmina Castle. In 1872 the Dutch wanted to leave the Gold Coast and sold their possessions including the Elmina Castle to the British who did not pay the rent. The Asantes attacked the British with a large force of 100,000 and the British brought in Sir Garnet Wolseley, a General with a great deal of war experience. He brought in a machine with circular saw to clear the bush road to Kumasi to enable his troops to march speedily and built 250 bridges to enable his 7 mm and 32 mm cannons cross the rivers. In 3 months he conquered and burnt down Kumasi. Kofi Karikari, the Asantehene ran from Kumasi but the British accepted his pleas for peace and at the Treaty of Fomena the Ashantes were deprived of all their territories and were to pay reparations of 50,000 ounces of gold. This was never paid. Kofi Karikari was destooled after the war and Treaty.

This was after the trade and practice were abolished internationally. The Ashantis won't stop and therefore, the many wars. Even a prominent Ashanti chief wrote to his British trading partners to disregard the Abolishment of Slave Trade and so they could continue with the horrendous trade. Also the Brtish were very much against rampant human sacrifice parctices by the Ashantis. Indeed, the treaty that the Ashanti had to sign, after they were vanquished in the Sagrenti war, specifically obliged them to stop among others, also this horrible human sacrifice tradition.
We need to be telling the truth and not falsifying history!!!!

It’s about time the state begin to take things seriously to regulate chieftaincy.
1. No chief should have any authority beyond his regional boundaries.
2. No chief should serve any state or stool beyond his or her regional boundaries.
Chieftaincy should be made to adhere to constitutional measures. No inflammatory language from chiefdoms.
