Can you discuss, the budget, accounting, banking and finance, science and technology, engineering, medicine, architecture, etc in any local language? Please don't take us back a thousand years. English is a language of opportunity. English unites is, local languages divide us. Let's stick to English as the official language and maintain our local languages in informal discussions and at the 'local' level. After all is English not a prerequisite to any level of education? The best thing is for us to make sure pupils in elementary schools are learning to read and write their mother tongue. And this should continue into high school. Already, there is the ridiculous thing of imposing one dialect of a language on all the pupils taking that language in junior sec. This is bad. The ones whose dialect it is not, have a hard time getting the same good grades as the others. It is discriminatory. So, imagine at the national level uses our languages in parliament. With all the issues of tribalism and the ridiculous behavior of some people who already think there is something like a " superior " language, because it happens to be THEIR language, the Speaker of Parliament is being naive! We can preserve languages by making them compulsory subjects in junior high school. Let people work on all languages, especially those feared to be disappearing. Parliament CANNOT be the place to preserve Ghanaian languages. It is already annoying enough when some TV and radio journalists interview people for news that are broadcast nationally and they don't have the courtesy and the professionalism to translate into English what is being said. It's fine for the person being interviewed to speak his/ language. But translate it into English!

What Ghana needs at this critical moment is to have a leader(president) who is CAPABLE, SINCERE, FAITHFUL, REAL, FIRM, HUMBLE, JUST, GENUINELY PATRIOTIC, NOT CORRUPT, HATES BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION, FULL OF INTEGRITY, and above all GOD-FEARING.
This kind of a leader(president) will automatically choose or sellect other Ghanaians of his kind and appoint them as ministers, MMCEs, DCELs, Heads of Institutions, etc. See Exodus 18:21
With this kind of LEADERSHIP in charge of affairs in Ghana, we don't need FOUR YEARS in order to get very far in TRUE, GENUINE, TANGIBLE, REAL BREAD AND BUTTER economic and political advancement.
May God make it possible for Ghana to have this KIND OF A LEADER(PRESIDENT), and may God bless our homeland Ghana, and make our nation great and strong.

Most of the people there speak or understood Twi. Presently, Twi is more spoken in Accra than Ga. It has become so because Twi is a Trading language.
On a more serious note, I think we should maintain the English language as our official language that should be used in Parliament. In the United States of America, there are various Red Indian tribes that have traditional languages and dialects but English is the official languages at the Senate and House of Representatives. Can we imagine so many vocabularies that cannot be put into our local languages?

Yes, we know that. but for the sake of brevity and simplicity English will not and does not harm us. The European union spent humungous amount of their budget on translation. Yet, when they meet in parliament, much as they detest the British, and even though they are no longer part of it, their minutes and debates are still conducted mostly in English. It is called common fucking sense and it works. When a Lithuanian, Latvian, Japanese Turkish ,Danish, Icelandic, Finnish meets an Argentinian, French, Ghanaian, Somali, Korean, Ethiopian, Thai, Dutch, Mongolian etc, chances are, they will get by with a bit of English. I have met hundred of Ghanaians abroad who have no shame in approaching an Ivorian co-worker to write basic English for them at their work place. Bunch of shameless fools!

It seems Africans like foreign things than our local things. Why are we throwing away our local direct. School Children this days can't speak their local language. Is that not shameful.

Just Come to a consensus on a 9articular language,say Fante and let's do it. It is much better to do things in our own language . Kudos Hon Bagbin!!!

I think the writer got the whole thing wrong. Nobody is going to force anyone to speak your local language. It says that will be allowed if the person so wishes, if an interpreter is around.
