The respected position of the Queen Mother within the power structure of Akans is unique and without equal in all of Ghana. Europeans have written extensively about it. She is most decisive authority in the nomination stages where there’s a contest. Where there is no competition with other royal clans, her choice of nominee usually proceeds to installation of as new Chief.

What is different here? The Ashanti Akans, unlike some others, have a very centralized system with almost absolute power vested in the Asantehene. He can overrule decisions at subordinate levels. Other Akan Overlords would say it’s fine as long as that’s acceptable to Elders at the periphery. This is not so with Otumfuor in KK Sarpon’s case. He has stamped his authority by rejecting the nominee favored and presented by the Queen Mother.

What can be done? Usually, the Queen Mother in consultation with her Elders have two options: 1/ find a new candidate or 2/ make an appeal to the Overlord. Unfortunately, KK Sarpong and the Queen Mother are using mob tactics as if we elect Akan Chiefs by hiring Zongo Boys chanting slogans to march through town. This plan will only anger the Overlord, making matters worse. You can’t intimidate the Asantehene nor force him to accept a contestant.

These custom in fact we well documented by many of our illustrious forefathers like Casely Hayford.

Just to note that Chieftaincy is protected and regulated by our constitution and its CA 2008.

However the respective traditional authorities may have distinguished and nuanced traditions which are also protected by the same. The problem with them is that these customs are not always documented.
I would imagine that Offinso existed before Asante and thus had a means and tradition for selecting its Omanhene, independent of the Asantehene

I am not sure the Asantehene has the power to select or destool an Omanhene of Asante with few exceptions. Although He could refuse to accept an oath of allegiance which would be damning.

However his protest, as I understand it is that the elect is not eligible and if that is the case then the protest is valid.

Problem in Ghana is no one goes through the proper channels and this is what creates clashes and often leads to harm, destruction and regrettably some times loss of life .

He claims Nkoranzahemaa should be allowed to select the chief of Nkoranza. Why’s he not following the same principles at Offinso?.

It is only the kingmakers in Offinsoman who can appoint a chief and present him to Kumasi chiefs as their appointed Offinso chief. The Kumasi chief, aka Ashantihene, is obviously usurping the mandate of the kingmakers in Offinso as well as perpetrating Kumasi grand agenda of enslaving all other members in the confederate by intimidating and threatening them, with war, violence and anarchy, to surrender their sovereignty to Kumasi, which is clearly backward, aarchaic and anachronistic, instead of equality, respect and .mutual union.

Offinsoman is a sovereign state and is not colony of Kumasi.

According to the laws of Ghana Otumfour can’t appoint a paramount chief and he knows. If this case goes to Court it will cause a lot of harm than good. He knows that well that is why he has been involving some factions from Offinso. If not he could have just exercise his authority, as perceived, over Offinso. This unnecessary litigation could’ve been avoided by both parties. Offinso is independent and can do as they wish under the constitution. The only thing Otumfour can do is to not give audience to any person that would be elected paramount chief in his palace. Otumfour may have breached their own customs because of personal vendetta against KK. KK Sarpong on the other hand as a lawyer and learned fellow could’ve been given advise to the Queen Mother on the dos and don’ts. It is common knowledge to perceive that they will be willing to head into a legal battle with the Otumfour which could test the constitution and break the myths on the authority of the Golden Stool. As I’ve suggested earlier, this could cause more carnage than we ever imagined. It could either ostracized KK Sarpong or undermine the Otumfour’s authority. We wait to see!!!

The whole idea of electing an Omanhene or certain chiefs is that they are suited to the role and also eligible.

You cannot appoint someone because of there wealth. they have to have the right values and wisdom.

Nor can the Obaahema act unilaterally, it is for them to demonstrate that he comes from the correct lineage and that all protocols have been followed.

The Offinsohemee must sue Otumfour on this issue at the World Court in Haque in the Netherlands. If she dares go to the Supreme Court in Ghana, she will lose her case since the Supreme Court of Ghana always rules in favour of Otumfour.

What at all does Dr KK Sarpong want in life? He has achieved so much in his lifetime and is highly respected by many Ghanaians. However, it has become clear that he is allowing himself to be dragged into the mud by the actions of the deposed Queenmother. The question is whether he will die if he doesn’t become the paramount chief of an area which has found out that he is nowhere near the stool, and therefore is not qualified to be the senior chief. What at all will the chieftaincy title be for him? He has been disqualified by the Asantehene three times; yet he allows himself to be deceived by a deposed Queenmother and a group of illiterate people. What is wrong with him at all?
