This headline in the UK Guardian newspaper caught my eye a week ago "Thousands of foreign nurses a year leave UK to work abroad"
The number of UK-registered nurses looking to [work in] other countries doubled in just one year between 2021-22 and 2022-23 to a record potential 12,400 and has soared fourfold since before the coronavirus pandemic. THOSE GHANAIAN NURSES EARGERLY LOOKING TO RUSH TO THE UK TO WORK HAD BETTER READ THIS ARTICLE AND DO SOME SERIOUS HOMEWORK AS WELL. Failure to check these facts (e.g talking to those who have arrived in countries like the UK, Germany, France, Holland etc within the last 5 years) before going there could result in severe hardship, frustration and even despair. The streets of London, Paris, Hamburg, Amsterdam and New York are not paved with gold. The story is similar for other healthcare workers including for the first time even doctors and other high earning professionals. We must not allow the success stories of some of those who arrived on these foreign shores a decade or more ago and are now well established to beguile us. The economic picture in most Western countries has deteriorated alarmingly over the last few years with COST OF LIVING CRISIS DRIVING MANY INTO POVERTY. All the low hanging fruit is gone. There is no space here to explain why this has happened.

THE PROBLEM IS NOT HOW TO GET THERE BUT RATHER HOW TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO LIVE WHEN YOU GET THERE. That has become the number one concern. This explains why over the last 3-4 years thousands of foreign UK based nurses have been leaving the UK for countries like the USA ,Canada, Australia and others. Most nurses relocating to the UK will end up working in the cities and larger towns which means they will face the highest cost of living. Accommodation is extremely expensive in most large population centers which is where the demand for nurses is greatest . The cost of electricity, gas (all essential especially during the cold months), water have gone through the roof. Running a car or even using public transport will bankrupt you unless you have that good second income. Some Ghanaians have literally given up sleeping! I am not joking. They work during the day and also have a night job and sleep 2 or 3 hours a day if they are lucky. That is a guaranteed passport to a very shortened life expectancy or at least the early onset of High Blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Mental Health disorders and an increased risk of several types of cancers. WHY SEEK AN EARLY GRAVE? IS IT REALLY WORTH IT?

Do you know what happens when a person subjects their body to that kind of punishment over just a few months? Their productivity quickly falls off, they lose their creativity ,focus and are far more likely to make serious mistakes (which could cost them their job).Most Bosses can tell if an employee is underperforming even if they don't know the reason for it.
Even far more serious is the effect of exposing your body to such abnormal stress (AND WORKING LIKE THIS IS HUGE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS). THIS RESULTS IN VARIOUS POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING ILLNESSES- OBESITY, CHRONIC VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY,HYPERTENSION(HIGH BP) ,TYPE 2 DIABETES ,HEART DISEASE,DEPRESSION. THERE IS A LINK BETWEEN LONG-TERM NIGHT SHIFTS AND SUSCEPTIBILITY (a tendency to be affected by) TO SOME CANCERS.

Throughout organized education of man, the expectation at the end of good education/ schooling is jobs; good jobs. So Ghana’s education, like our electricity production and distribution come to us care off clueless people. When ex-president Mahama wanted a slow phase- in of the free SHS scheme, starting with sustainable infrastructures, irresponsible idiots would not have it. When he suggested we stop paying nursing and teacher trainees allowances so there’s equity and fairness with all students in tertiary education the moron could not understand either. Today you graduate empty heads, with no job/work prospects, we cannot pay to feed SHS students , cannot pay to provide uninterrupted electricity and our teachers and nurses are leaving like the new slaves. What good is free SHS if we do not have hone grown wisdom and manpower to develop our own nation? They allow these nurses to do things on their own paying heavily to go without the govt getting any benefit from them, thus going out there as slaves in 21st century. When they were entering the Training school were they told they would be put in the apartments or bungalows after their Training. Are they more important than the teachers. She should go to some villages and see the sacrifices that they have been making. You want the nurses to be put in storey buildings before they can deliver. Change your attitude towards work because most of you dont deserve to be nurse.
