Approximately 5% of African carry the gene. I personally know of at least 5 people in Accra who have died over the last few years because they were prescribed the wrong medication that they could not take because of their G6PD deficiency. Let’s be vigilant and get tested for the condition.

From 2011 to 2017, I was on and off omeprazole and nexium for what the doctors at 3 hospitals, including Korle Bu diagnosed as gastritis, peptic ulcer, stomach ulcer, but which turned out to be colon cancer.

After a successful surgery in 2017 to remove almost half of my colon, I started dreading the side effects of all the omeprazole and nexium on my body. The psychological effect alone is terrible.

By the grace of God, I live on.

Now that you mention it, I think at one point esomeprazole was also prescribed. I thought these were three different drugs.

Nexium was the most expensive at the time. I remember paying 10 GHc per tablet.

This is not an attempt to denigrate any health facility or medical personnel. In fact, it was the same Korle Bu that carried out the successful surgery. I believe my case baffled some of the doctors. I still have my folder from Korle Bu. This is not something one makes up.

And as one of us has just mentioned if he was G6PD deficient (lacking) he could not have taken a sulphur drug for 6-8 months it would have destroyed (broken up) 'all' his red blood cells!!! Thank you.
