Dormaa East: Six arrested for illegal mining

“ Six illegal mining operators have been arrested in a joint security operation by the Dormaa East District Police Command, NADMO, the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), and some assembly members led by the district chief executive, Emmanuel Kofi Agyemang.

Last year, the Dormaa East District Assembly launched “Operation End Galamsey Now,” in which 14 illegal miners were arrested.

Two of them have so far been sentenced to serve various terms of imprisonment, according to the Dormaa East district chief executive, Emmanuel Kofi Agyeman

The latest operation saw six suspected illegal miners arrested in a joint security swoop in two communities within the Dormaa East District: Dormaa Akwamu and Atta-Obey. Some of the equipment seized at the two sites were mainly shovels, pickaxes, and mattocks.

At the time of the arrest, some of the suspects were actively engaged in illegal mining along the Supre River in Dormaa-Akwamu.

In an interview, Agyemang, said nine sites were visited by the team, which led to the arrest of six people while three others fled.

He said the District Security Council will not relent in its efforts to clamp down on the activities of illegal miners in the district.

He commended President Akufo Addo and Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeyo Dr Agyemang Badu for their bold decision to fight against illegal mining.

“ The President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, has issued a one-month ultimatum for the government to halt illegal mining popularly known as Galamsey in the country.

Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, who doubles as the Dormaahene and also serves as High Court Judge, warned that failure by the government to act would force the chiefs to rise and reclaim their lands.

He served the notice when the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama paid a courtesy call on as part of his campaign tour of the region.

“We’re giving this incumbent government one month to use legal means to stop people involved in this Galamsey. The government should deploy police and soldiers into the forests to stop them.

If the government fails to do this, the land is ours, we will just reclaim it and we won’t allow any sort of mining to take place,” he said.

Meanwhile, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has also called for an immediate ban on gold prospecting in rivers, forests, and other sensitive areas.

In a statement dated September 9, 2024, signed by nine UTAG presidents, the association demanded a total ban on Galamsey.

Also, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has delivered a damning verdict on the illegal mining crisis, declaring that things are only getting worse.

The GBA believes that the government is failing to make any real progress and has condemned the politicisation of the issue, describing it as irresponsible, shocking, and regrettable “

Since the Dormaahene issued that order, nobody has been given a permit to go to any portion of Dormaa lands to do galamsey. If tue Asantehene thinks well of his subjects, he must act decisively now. He can't call for the end of galamsey in public and then accept gold and money from those involved in galamsey in the Ashanti Region.
