Illegal small scale mining or galamsey has been going on with impunity over decades and its intensity increased dramatically with the introduction of heavy earth moving equipment from 2010 to date. Granted, this government tried to curtail it but to no avail because of the kinds of people involved; from big men to chiefs, politicians, foreigners and laborers which include women and girls just seeking their daily bread. The problem we’re facing with this menace should be confronted not from a partisan point of view. It’s interesting that all of a sudden and close to a general election voices have increased in an apparent orchestrated effort to pressure the government into taking drastic steps that would damage the whole mining industry in Ghana permanently, hurt the public purse and create further unemployment. Government will not bow to this pressure because it’s tantamount to political and electoral blackmail of the most sinister order. Organized labour should have a conference with government and other stakeholders to resolve this matter amicably. We all know the dangers of the menace of galamsey and acknowledge the fact that it needs to be stopped but as soon as the issue becomes politicized it complicates everything. The law that prohibits mining near or in water bodies must be enforced with all the might of the State immediately and with massive intensity.
