  The Speaker was right in the application of Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. When an MP crosses the floor, he/she must resign in the current Parliament and not the future Parliament. Law Makers and Law Interpreters must follow the same path. It is unfortunate that this basic language (in English) for this Article 97 is beating many people. Please read this Article 97 well. To me both Speakers got right.

  The speaker has no such powers . It is clearly written that a high court has the power to declare a seat vacant.
  
  But on the issue of floor crossing . Ppl don’t seem to understand what it is . I have done extensive research and there is no jurisdiction in which seeking the mandate of the ppl in on a ticket is deemed as floor crossing.
  Read about the Nigerian congress and senate and find out what constitutes floor crossing.
  Akuffo Addo cld have simply used ministerial appointments and/or bribe to convince some NDC MPs to join the majority in order to have a stronger majority in Parliament . But due to that clause , any NDC MP who agreed wld have had to vacate the seat and their constituents wld be given a fresh mandate to choose another MP in a bye elections. That’s what the clause is there to prevent . Not the nonsense many Ghanaians think the clause was meant for .
