What is the main reason that the British decided to invade Ashantland and seize their Royals?
I believe it was due to the extreme practice of human sacrifice.
Our borthers and sisters captured from the Northern part of the Ghana and beyond were offered as human sacrifie to the gods of the land. Because of this reason, the Northerners do no trust the Ashanti people sine they were regarded as blood thirsty people.
The British in their attempt to stop this practice invaded Ashanti in 1874 ( Sagrenti War) but it did not stop.
So min 1900 they decided to end it once and for all by seizing their King and his Lieutenants and deport them.
The Argument put forward by our Historians is that the British wanted tto have access to their Gold. This is a flimsy excuse. The main reason was to stop intra African slavery and and human sacrofice.
