What is even more harrowing than the tragic burning to ashes of the two young ladies in that preventable accident is the pathetic decline of the substance and quality of members of the legal profession in this country which is responsible for passing the inconsequential sentence. From the highest levels of the Supreme Court right down through to individual practicing lawyers, members of the legal profession are now looked upon with great resentment and derision. The law in this country has lost its primary motive of justice for all. More and more, it now seems as if clients of lawyers have become mere means by which lawyers of contending sides gang up to make a fortune out of their hapless and miserable clients. The situation has so deteriorated that lawyers now dwell on legal technicalities rather than moral justice to settle cases.

A year or two ago, one of the few remaining luminaries of legal prominence, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, exhorted the nation to focus more on producing lawyers of excellence rather than wholesale quantities whose competence was becoming more and more suspect. This obviously commendable opinion was met with a barrage of insults and abuse which effectively killed the idea before it could even be meaningfully considered for discussion and approval.

I must emphasize that if the judiciary and justice system in this country is to work properly in the interest of our entire society, we must all rise up and speak out against the tyranny of a faulty legal infratructure.
