You have uniformed Security, mandatory insurance for all traders etc Accra mall never has any fire issues. Learn from them. Accra needs modern urbanization planning with vertical n horizontal streets, named streets and numbered buildings..odd numbers on the left, even numbers on n the right. Rebuild this market n use this as a catalyst for such planning. Finally, Accra as administration capital must be moved away elsewhere

The traders must be immediately stopped from recreating the conditions that have in the past to date, continued to cause fires and very unhygienic conditions in our markets. They must be made to understand that all structures are by law, erected under licence - in the case of traders, the licences are only temporary and can be revoked at any time by city/town authorities.

The market traders should also understand that the land on which they trade is not their land as of right. They are trading there today because a retinue of shamelessly incompetent, inept and corrupt Mayors of Accra, from the PNDC era to date, shirked their responsibilities and ignored their presence there. If the Mahama govt is serious and they have great ideas for modernizing Accra into an attractive and respectable city, they should address the recurrent problems of random street/pavement trading as well as the need to renovate or redesignate all markets in Accra.

Some of our filthy markets in Accra are sitting on multi-million dollar lands whilst MMDAs are unable to collect sufficient tolls from markets to even pay their staff so they depend on govt subvention.

Ghana has sunk into a classic shit-hole third world malaise and I'm not sure if the leadership of the new govt is tenacious and committed enough to deal with such difficulties.

Kudos to the traders for moving to rebuild their livelihoods, but the government should quickly step in the lead to help the traders rebuild better and nicer than what was there before otherwise it will be a lost opportunity.
