Security Lapses in Ghana: A Call to Action

The 2024 general elections in Ghana were hailed as one of the most pivotal moments in our democratic journey. However, the aftermath of this crucial event has revealed disturbing security lapses that threaten not only the integrity of our institutions but the very foundation of peace and order in our country. The lack of decisive action from the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, has allowed thugs and criminal elements to wreak havoc on state institutions, public officials, and the people of Ghana. It is time for a serious reckoning, and a call for action to restore the rule of law.
In the days following the election, violence erupted across several regions, with thugs emboldened by the absence of swift and strong leadership. The lack of leadership at that moment is perhaps due to the overwhelming defeat of the NPP government which stripped the almighty Akuffo Addo of his entrenched powers and Mahama who had not been sworn in to take control. The most alarming of these incidents was the attack on the Electoral Commission's offices in Accra, where unknown assailants stormed the premises, ransacked files, and destroyed critical electoral documents. This brazen act of violence undermined the credibility of our democratic processes, threatening to destabilize the confidence Ghanaians place in our electoral system. Yet, despite the severity of this attack, then President-elect Mahama’s response was lukewarm, offering little more than statements of concern rather than concrete actions to hold the perpetrators accountable.
In another chilling example, a group of armed men broke into the office of a prominent government official, demanding access to sensitive materials. The brazen nature of this attack—carried out in broad daylight—highlights the erosion of security within our cities and towns. Reports from local security agencies suggest that these men were directly linked to political groups that felt emboldened by the post-election environment. The lack of action from the state, again, allowed the situation to spiral out of control. Rather than taking swift and decisive action to protect public officials and their institutions, the government’s inaction left the country vulnerable to further escalation.
Perhaps the most disheartening incident was the violent protests that erupted at the University of Ghana, Legon, where students clashed with police forces. What began as peaceful demonstrations over election-related issues quickly turned into chaos when masked individuals, armed with sticks and stones, attacked security personnel and innocent bystanders. These thugs were reportedly aligned with certain political factions, further blurring the line between legitimate protest and criminal activity. There have been several subsequent attacks by masked individuals across the country. Yet, despite the destruction and injury, there was no immediate intervention by the government to bring the situation under control. The delayed response to such incidents not only endangered lives but also sent a message that violence would go unpunished.
As if this were not alarming enough, the current government’s actions in the wake of these violent episodes point to a deeply troubling trend: the focus is not on securing the country or punishing the wrongdoers but rather on suppressing opposition voices. In the aftermath of the elections, the government has been quick to set up dubious entities like the "ORAL" (Operation for the Restoration of Accountability and Law), a campaign that seems more focused on persecuting political opponents than safeguarding public order or holding the attackers accountable. This initiative, launched in the name of restoring order, has been criticized for being selectively applied, used as a tool to target opposition leaders while turning a blind eye to the violence perpetrated by groups aligned with the ruling party.
This double standard is evident when we look at the government’s inaction in addressing the very real attacks on state institutions. While opposition figures are being hunted down and punished under the guise of “restoring order,” those involved in attacking the Electoral Commission or vandalizing public offices have yet to face any meaningful consequences. It is a dangerous precedent when the state’s response to violence is dictated more by political considerations than by the need to maintain peace and justice for all Ghanaians, irrespective of their political affiliations.
This has compounded the sense of lawlessness in the country. Thugs from various political factions, especially those who feel they are owed power after eight years in opposition, have taken matters into their own hands. As they attack and destroy state property in the name of claiming their "right to power," they are emboldened by the government's silence and selective justice. In this climate of impunity, it is clear that the government’s focus is not on safeguarding the security of the Ghanaian people or strengthening institutions, but on consolidating political control at any cost.
The failure to take swift and meaningful action against these violent groups is a betrayal of the very values Ghana stands for—values that have earned us respect as a stable democracy in West Africa. The very values that President Mahama purports to advocate for and fought for while in opposition in the past eight years. The current leadership must do more than just issue hollow statements of concern. We need concrete actions that restore the rule of law, ensure accountability, and protect our democratic institutions.
It is time for the government to put its priorities straight:
1. Strengthening Security Forces: Our police, military, and other law enforcement agencies must be given the resources, training, and mandate to act decisively in the face of such threats. This means better funding, enhanced intelligence-gathering, and the removal of political influence from the security sector.
2. Holding Perpetrators Accountable: It is essential that those responsible for these acts of violence are identified and brought to justice. President Mahama must ensure that no individual or group is above the law, regardless of their political affiliation. The selective targeting of opposition figures through "ORAL" must stop, and the law must apply equally to all.
3. Reforming the Electoral Process: The Electoral Commission and other state institutions must be safeguarded from political interference. Measures must be put in place to protect sensitive materials and prevent any future attacks that threaten the integrity of our democracy.
4. Creating a National Dialogue on Security: It is time for a national conversation on how to protect our institutions, officials, and citizens from political violence. This dialogue must involve all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society, and the media, to ensure that our democracy remains resilient and secure.
Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in West Africa is in jeopardy if these security lapses continue unchecked. The world has looked to us as a model of peaceful transitions of power, but we are at risk of losing that status if the situation is not addressed with the urgency it deserves. President Mahama must act now to protect Ghana’s democracy, institutions, and the safety of its people. This is not just a political responsibility—it is a moral imperative.
It is time to put an end to the lawlessness and restore the Ghanaian dream of peace, unity, and security for all. The time for action is now.
