It Is Finished!

Ordinarily, I'm not in favour of truncating a criminal process in court without our not only getting to the bottom of the matter but also knowing the truth, especially in corruption cases involving public and civil servants.

But in this Dr Opuni and co. case, there is a cause for exception. Not only has the process gone on for so long -- close to 8 years! Haba!; but also, curiously, it has along the line taken some strange circuitous turns, like changing of presiding judges; transferring of presiding judges; starting the case de novo; resumption of the case in its old form. Only God knows what new twist awaited the process!

When a process is going through this "merry-go-round", runaround and runabout for close to a decade, groping in darkness, seeming to be scared of forward-movement, with changing of "referees" along the line, even the spectators will feel sleepy, if not dizzy; they will lose interest in the case! What's worse, the case 'suffers' the popular measure, "if you know it, show it"; in other words, "if you had a case against the accused, you should have shown it by now". The longer the process rambles on, with all its strange twists and turns, the more it reeks more of persecution than of prosecution.

It is said "the wheels of justice grind slowly"; but this trial was turning into "the wheels of persecution grind dizzily". From preferring charges of causing financial loss to the state against the accused persons, the case was turning into a prosecution that was taking so long a time, and a trial too mired in unclarity, that it was generating financial loss to the state. About time case closed!

In any civilized setting, this matter would have been struck from the books based on both the facts adduced and the quixotic decision by the former AG to treat the case as De Novo under a judge of his choosing. The right thing has been done for all intents and purposes. If I were Opuni I'd file charges against the state.
