The BBC should get this. The fact that there is economic interests involved does not make it less of a jihad. In jihad, the mujahids or holy warriors are entitled to certain benefits. One is the wealth of the enemy. Another is the women of the enemy whereby the jihadists are entitled to rape them for their sexual gratification or even marry them if they wish. Again, the jihadists benefit by the fact that Allah allows them to enslave the enemy and also makes it legal for the slaves owner to rape or sleep with his slaves as and when he wants to whether his wife permits that or not. And the final motivation is the automatic paradise they are admitted to when they die in the course of fighting where they are rewarded 72 virgins whose virginity is said to be renewable. These are the Islamic teachings of jihad which Mohammed and his disciples practiced. In fact, it was one of such women of the enemy Mohammed forcefully married after killing her people who poisoned him to his early death.

Fairness, fairness, fairness must prevail for peace to reign. Those of you who have visited especially Mali would have noticed that the Tuareg and Fulani looking type(living mostly in the North) were not respected by the Darkies in the South and have been mostly EXCLUDED from government since independence. They dwell in poverty in the Sahara Desert north of Mali where the Southerners barely visited except those adventurous youths attempting the land trips to Libya etc. They started clamouring for a country of their own where they would govern themselves. If the Sahelian States leaders at that time hard listened to them and given them total autonomy to create that country Aswad, and roped them into West Africa through ECOWAS later, we would not have been on this slippery bloody path. It's not the SIZE of the country that matters! It's the quality of the life of the people who live in it. Call their leaders and sit down and work out the boundaries(forget the Frenchman's own) and give them their Desert for West Africa's peace. This will put the opportunists( the cattle thieves, armed robbers etc) to shame. Remember it's this same Tuaregs who SCATTERED Old Ghana Empire. Let wisdom prevail. How's that?
