A good one there! Very brilliant and this needs to be supported by all both residents and visitors to the city centre of Kumasi. This won't be the first time and may not be the last time for such an exercise to take place in the two major cities in Ghana, Accra and Kumasi. The older ones will easily remember late Salifu Amankwah during Rawlings' 1979 revolution, what he did to hawkers and pedestrians at Nkrumah circle. We still remember the popular Ga word, aabayei, meaning they're coming. If my memory serves me well, this decongestion exercise has been repeated by almost every government since 1979 but none of them succeeded to sustain it that's why we are still talking about decongestion over 30 years down the line. All the successive governments failed to sustain it due to political expediency. Almost always the opposition party take sides and sympathise with the affected hawkers and when election is approaching, the hawkers return in bits and the city authorities pretend they have not seen them so the rest follow suit in matter of days. For fear of loosing power, politicians turn their backs to the hawkers and they have a field day. Apart from that the authorities seem to relaxing the pressure weeks prior to christmas festivities. The hawkers seem to have developed a strategy over the years and it's working perfectly for them and they are always ahead of the city authorities. Again, shop owners are equally part of the congestion as they display their goods or wares all the way from the shop to the walk ways. This is also happening in the new Kejetia market as it is becoming difficult for two people to walk abreast in the walk ways in the market. Is it going to be a nine day wonder as it happened in previous administrations or it would be sustained for ever? Only time will tell and I wish him well.
