  It’s a shame that we always have to mention players from colonial era whenever we’re asked about best Ghanaian footballer. Abedi was great but a vast majority of Ghanaian football fans living today never saw him or Polo kick a ball. The Polo guy in particular is always bragging about being the best there ever was but he did not win a single African player of the year award. Let’s be honest Ghana is lagging behind its peers. It’s been ages since we produce a player to win African player of the year. We need to move on from the Polo and even the Abedi era and produced modern and present day world class footballers

  Ibrahim Gariba himself was a very good defender, far better than the mediocre defenders playing fir the Black Stars. I remember his days with Cornerstones in particular.

  If he had played in the second leg, his presence would have prevented one goal and gotten one goal and the final score would have been 3:2 in favour of Hearts meaning Hearts would have annexed the Osagyefo cup on a 3:3 aggregate and he would have been voted Africa's best.

It is difficult to chose one cos there were great forwards and great defenders and great dribblers. Dribblers, Rev Osei Kofi was #1 followed by Polo. Defenders, Oblitey, Kuuku Dadzie, Awuley Quaye etc. Finishers, we had Mfum, Kwasi Owusu, Dan Owusu Edward Acquah, goal thief Peter Lamptey. Flair, we had Adolf Armah, Aggrey Fynn, Joe Sam. GK, Robert Mensah, Dodo Ankrah, Kwao Baffoe,. So it really difficult to declare one as the GOAT.

  The writer failed to acknowledge that Gariba moved from Cornerstones to Kotoko after trailblazers, Haruna Yusif and Ernest Appau.
  Yes Polo was great in his hey days, from 1973 to 1977 when Hearts of Oak had the fearsome five (Expensive Robert Hammond, Bomber Mama Acquah, Goal Thief Peter Lamptey, Thunder Anas Seidu and Polo, the dribbling magician) and were the losing finalists in
  Africa to Hafia Conakry.
  In 1978, Polo was injured and even though he was a member of the Black Star Group that won the Afcon in Ghana, he shared the left wing position with Kuntu Blankson of SS 74 fame.
  Razak won the best player of that Afcon.
  In 1979, Polo's position in Hearts had been taken over by Douglas Tagoe, who together with Robert Hammond, Thunder Anas Seidu, Kingston Asabre and John Nketsiah Yawson, were also losing finalists in Africa to Union Douala of Cameroon.
  So many good players have passed through Ghana football but they couldn't qualify us for the World Cup till 2006, when the African slots were increased to 5.
  For me, football greats in Ghana have been generational but to have a GOAT, I doubt.

Abdul Razak and Ibrahim Sunday also won the Africa best footballer once each of them. I will place the two of them after the Soccer Maestro. Mohamed Polo and Osei Kofi were also great.Not forgetting Michael Esien , Samuel Osei Kuffuor, Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew ( all won BBC Africa player award) and final Anthony Yeboah also played well especially in Europe.
