Freddie Blay and Gertrude Torkornoo
A former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has condemned President John Dramani Mahama's decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking in an interview on GH One TV, monitored by GhanaWeb on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, he described the move as a dangerous precedent that could undermine the judiciary.
"As a lawyer, I look at it and feel very hurt. And I believe that some of us panic over it. It's painful; the Chief Justice is the head of the judiciary, one of the very important organs of government. I'm not talking as a party man or someone whose party at the time appointed the Chief Justice," he said.
"I've read through the three petitions, and I'm appalled. I feel very sorry that we are destabilising the judiciary," he added.
President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice after a prima facie case was determined in three separate petitions calling for her removal from office. He has also set up a five-member committee to inquire into the petitions.
In the interim, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is acting as Chief Justice.
