I associate myself with one guy who put forward a brilliant idea on the need for mechanized farming in Ghana. I overheard the minister of finance talking about cocoa plantation farming. Is interesting to note that many African countries produce what we do not eat and import what we eat. That’s been a mark of colonialism and feeble mindedness of the African even though we live in a post colonial era.
I can’t understand why we still spend hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars to import rice, a commodity that takes only three months to plant and harvest. It takes only two months to grow and harvest tomatoes and yet we spend millions of dollars each year to import canned tomatoes. The list goes on and on: sugar imports, fruit juice, sanitary pads, toilet rolls, and several food commodities.
The way forward:
Import tractors and combined harvesters, planters, mobile irrigators, balers, choppers, mowers, Kwik till, self propelled mower conditioners, windrowers, propelled forage harvesters, plows,rotary mowers, field cultivators, grain trucks, wheel loaders, telehandlers, box scrappers etc. instead of Toyota land cruisers, Range Rovers and other V8 vehicles.
Secondly, the national service scheme should be used as a springboard to train our youth in commercial agriculture, animal and fish farming. As it stands, several millions of cedis are spent on a human capital that we do not have enough data to measure the profitability and overall benefits in the real sectors of our economy. Giving them a handy trade after graduation will be doing them a great service.
Thirdly, the military and police could be engaged in going into farming. Crimes in Africa are predominantly hunger related. Giving enough food to the youth will slash down the prison population by over 70%. That can easily cut down the manpower needed by the police and the prison services by over 50%. That will save the country billions of cedis every year and such savings could be channeled into the manufacturing sector.
Fourthly, restaurants and other food joints should become the sole presence of indigenous people.
These and many other interventions could simply propel Africa into industrialization instead of becoming an import driven economy.

I don't live in Ghana, so will someone please clue me in. If buy the kenkey for 3 ghana cedis, does it come with the fish and pepper, or you have pay extra for the fish and pepper too?

Most of the people driving them cannot legitimately/honestly afford them, and neither can the government of Ghana. So why are they all over Ghana ??? Instead of fixing the roads for everyone to drive pothole free, the last government focused on buying V8’s at over $100,000 each. What a mentally retarded way of leading a country. And yes, Nana Addo went to hire a $15,000 an hour private jet to go abroad to beg for financial assistance. What a clown.
