The whole political system needs to be decentralized. Elect assembly members and MMDCE’s. These should run their own budget geared to the development of their local areas. They can then plan any job creation, road constructions, water and sanitary system, build schools, hospitals and other infrastructure. They can then control their local areas, have local policing system put in place, etc. It will bring down cost of construction, ensure local participation and community involvement, accountability, create local entrepreneurial skills, check rural-urban migration, ease congestion, etc. It will shift our focus from general and parliamentary elections to local elections. It will certainly minimize post election violence as it will de-emphasize parliamentary elections in favor of local elections. Finally, MP’s common fund can be given to local councils to manage. Period!

Our present political system has been the bane of grand corruption. Contracts are signed in Accra, supervisors come from Accra, machines come from Accra, bribes are paid in Accra, jobs are concentrated in Accra, basic infrastructures are concentrated in Accra, food produced are sent to Accra, the “Accra-Kumasi “ syndrome has done a great deal of disservice. Our schools are supervised from regional and district headquarters. How do we hold people accountable and ensure efficiency in matters like this? Those who grow cocoa, the backbone of our economy get nothing whilst Cocoa Village, a plush community is sited in Tema. The revenue from cocoa are rather kept in Accra whilst these poor farmers lack everything. In a scenario like this we do not expect the youth to enter into agriculture since it’s not lucrative and beneficial. Let’s look into our political system and incorporate the chieftaincy system as an embodiment of and oversight for a better Ghana
