The doctor should have explained why it is utterly unnecessary to bleach, even for an adult. Of all races, the African dark skin is the most effective protection against the harmful UV rays from the sun, which causes skin cancer. Europeans, who have fair skin, cannot produce melanin, the chemical that naturally produces dark skin as a protective shield against the sun's UV rays. That is why fair-skin people suffer from skin cancer; Africans don't suffer from skin cancer, due to the dark protective cover. Now, anyone who understands this won't go about bleaching their skin, let alone their infants.' When you explain medical facts to people, they organize their lives without the need to police them.

Thanks for your comment. It's a serious problem but we don't see it that. Usually, we realize the harmful effects of bleaching too late. Sadly enough, the youth don't learn anything from the grownups whose skins have been destroyed by bleaching products. Some pregnant women take bleaching pills just to change the skin colour of the unborn baby! I hate to see bleached nurses - they are not good examples.
Headteachers can call parents of bleached pupils/students and advise them. But for all you know the headteacher is a culprit. It's a serious problem but in Ghana we only talk about problems, we don't implement solutions.
