The perennial flooding in Accra and kumasi are as a result of inordinate human activities and lack of respect for our environment. Every household in Accra and kumasi have hard concrete surfaces, pavement blocks and other eco-unfriendly materials, plastics, etc. We grew up at a time when green grasses were the order of the day and all schools had beautiful green landscapes. It was therefore not difficult for the rains to find their way to the soil. Highland areas had green shrub cover. Accra plains are full of inselbergs, residual mountains, and areas such as Sowutuom, Oyarifa, etc bear witness to beautiful mountainous areas. Due to human activity and disrespect for Mother Earth, buildings have sprung up where they are not supposed to be. In effect we are all paying dearly for the wrong we’ve done to Mother Earth. Isn’t it funny that in a tropical country like Ghana where every plant grows, we import artificial carpets from China to create artificial green surfaces when we could have had carpet grasses planted everywhere and any such move would have created lasting and enduring jobs for our youth. The parks and gardens are dead. Lawn mowing is a major employer for many rural dwellers in the first world countries. Why do we still have open gutters filled with plastics? Let’s think better
