In a country rife with corruption, where people pick up a Bible, bleach themselves, wear shiny suits to defraud the poorest and vulnerable of society, tell me how this is a minor issue? I bet, there are some people who lost their entire livelihoods, thinking they would double their money.

Let me hazard a guess that those saying this is a "minor" crime are either beneficiaries of the scam, are non-Ghanaian citizens, or live outside Ghana. If not, how do you live with yourself by saying the sentence is harsh? If you live in the West or subscribe to their kind of punishment, know that: 1) this type of nonsense doesn't exist in their countries. 2) Their laws work to protect their citizens.

Mind you, there are other so-called pastors doing the same thing or worse in Ghana, except they don't promise a return on investment (collection/giving). If a strong deterrent isn't sent to the nation, how do you expect these highway robberies to stop?

This judgement will be thrown out at the high court.
This is the reason. It is a faith matter. She did not put a gun to anyone to give her money. Section 132 of Act 29 Criminal Offences Act is the main law the4 judge relied on. The definition of the law is as follows:
"a person is guilty of defrauding by false pretence, if by any false pretence or by personation, he obtains the consent of another person to part with or transfer the ownership of anything".

Now, we have to explain what false pretence is here. Agradaa did not pretend to be anything else than a woman of faith. She did not pretend to be something else. With faith matters, there is no evidence to be adduced. There is no metric that can be used in measuring faith however, faith is allowed under the laws. Courts generally cannot and or do not deal with matters of faith because it is almost impossible to have evidence of faith. This therefore to accuse Agradaa of false pretence is untenable.

Secondly, her sentence is capricious. The judge herself mentioned according to the lawyers of Agradaa that there was no evidence for counts 4 & 5. This reduces the tariff the judge can give by a wide margin.

Considering also that the quantum of money being what the alleged victim parted with was only 450GHC, this long sentence is highly unwarranted especially for a first time offender.

The is an unwritten rule that Circuit Courts are not places to be heavy handed in matters such as this one.

The judge has a personal beef with Agradaa and her antics that is why she sentenced her to this amount of years. It is no ones interest for such a heavy sentence.

It will be reversed.

Cecilia Dapaa, Adu Boahahen, Ken Ofori Atta and co will have their days in court before a different judge on their own merits under different circumstances. You cannot confuse the two or assume that because politicians are getting away with crime, so Agradaa should get off.

You touched on the very important political corollary. Yes, the politician are worse offenders. Proverbially speaking, Agraada is robbing the masses with a gun and our politicians are doing worse, albeit legally, with a briefcase. It may surprise you that my uncle, a military general, was a victim of Rawlings' 1979 revolution. I hated Rawlings with passion for decades, but I wished for the same thing to happen during Akuffo Addo's tenure and even today. Except whoever does it must have the people at heart, like Traore is doing in Burkina Faso. In short, I agree with you that our political corruption with impunity is the impetus for what Agraada has done.

My point is that the likes of Agradaaa are symptoms of the corruption that the thieving politicians—irrespective of political party—perpetuate upon the citizenry. Such acts of corruption lead to desperate individuals who throng to these churches.

It would have better served the citizens of properties of Agradaa were seized and the proceeds from the auctioned properties were given to those that were allegedly defrauded by Agradaa.

The court does not care about your feelings or opinion. Your feeling/opinion is not law. Conflating Agradaa's crime with that of criminal politicians is insane. The courts only Adjudicate cases based on the facts before them. Last i checked politicians were not involved in this Agradaa fraud case. So that you know, hundreds of people filed complaints/charges against Agradaa, but let's just say 20 people. Each complaint is a charge, and each charge is a count. So, if the jail sentence for fraud is 2 years for each count, it will be multiplied by 20 counts. So, a ball-park figure of 15-year sentence is generous for a case like this involving so many people.. Contrary to your ignorance, society will benefit if Agradaa is not out here still defrauding people.

Remember when Sammy Gyamfi gave her the money, she was telling Ghanaians to troop to her church to get the charm to go get money from whoever they wanted to, and that she was going to make sure she got so much from even the President. She had no remorse, and was going to make sure she continued duping others. These are some of the factors the judge considered.

All the religious stupidity and nonsense going is basically due to our constitution which gives room for religious freedom. Religious freedom is good but must be regulated as is being done in Rwanda. One cannot get up and get himself/herself a make-shift structure and a church is born. No, in Rwanda, there are requirements to be met and educational background including good structures and safety measures. Religious activities must as a matter urgency be streamlined or regulated to weed out charlatans using 'ways and means' to defraud 'customers'. Some christians will rise against any gov't that might curtail religious excesses but it will eliminate the activities of the charlatans.
