Don't compare then and now to justify the freebies which the politicians are using selfishly for electoral votes but not the rapid development of the nation. We are a developing country for christ sake and let us grow our country together. What is all these freebies about? It creates lazy citizens. What is the sense in borrowing to burden the country and throw around free in the name of education, when there is no industries for the work force being graduated? Channel those monies to create industries so that the people can work and take care of their families. I thought JM was coming to do different thing but unfortunately the same that has failed is being applied since 1981!

NAPO, please pleasenas a newly independent African country, there was the need to train Ghanaians to take over from the White British Colonialists. At that time we were poor so the scholarship for university students.We ate free food three times a day with dessert .After dinner, we went to the coffee room for coffee served in coffee cups. There were steward boys who waited on us.Then we had free allowance. My generation called the allowance "16 million ".Students from the North also had extra free allowance. A lot of Ghanaians also had scholarships to study abroad, both in Western Europe and Eastern Europe. Please NAPO, President Nkrumah embarked on industrialization of this country. A lot of industries were established to offer employment to Ghanaians. He also established Workers brigades and the State Farms which produced food and ventured into large scale commercial farming. He also built the State Hotels .He built the State enterprises,.State Housing which built the Estates and State Transport Corporation were all established by President Nkrumah and they offered employment to Ghanaians

Very true. We tasted a bit of it in 1980 and things started slipping thereafter to what we have today.

Can we ever return to the good old days? We need all hands on deck with integrity to achieve that.

This was all possible simply because the student population was comparatively smaller than as it exists now. Employers trooped to the universities to conduct interviews for potential candidates for positions available in their establishments. Students Population growth and explosion in the 1980s truncated the system, regretfully.

So, why should the youth of today not take back what they were denied? Given that Ghanaians believe they are entitled to reparations for something that happened hundreds of years ago, why shouldn't kids feel entitled to reparations from those who reneged on their DUTY to improve Ghana 50-years ago?

Another point of note is that during the 1970s the population of Ghana and that of its students (more so tertiary students), were maneagable. Thus for accomodation, those in the old halls were sleeping one to a room, and in the new halls (ex Legon hall annexe, 2 students to a room).

Unfortunately due to our population “explosion” and tough economic times, the status quo of then, cannot be replicated now.
