In 1923, British Togoland was divided into North and South British Togoland and Kwame Nkrumah helped both North and South British Togoland to integrate with the Gold Coast in 1956. As Ghana was nearing its independence, on 9th May 1956, the United Nations held a plebiscite in British Togoland for them to decide whether to integrate with the Gold Coast or separate to unite with French Togoland. Kwame Nkrumah helped British Togoland to vote to integrate with the Gold Coast.
