That's a lie, I was in the US Army for 4 years and got deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan but never treated differently.

This is no news. Every jurisdiction has their own rules of engagement. Go and read the Ghana military engagement rules. In US even if you're 100 years no problems Iraq awaits you so you can go and join them.
