We will either continue to keep our dollars, euros and pounds under our pillows until the exchange rates improve or we will buy our project materials from here and send them to Ghana to continue our projects. When the dollar was selling at ghc15, a bag of cement was selling for ghc 125 and now that you have tamed the dollar and it’s selling at GHC 10.25, a bag of cement is GHC 115. It doesn’t make any economic sense for us to send our hard earned forex to Ghana for any business transaction. Maybe you can print your own forex and give it to the banks to sell at the rates that are in line with your mid year budget as read by your finance minister.

I have stopped sending money to my mason because I am not sending money until either the prices of goods go down significantly or the pound appreciates against the cedi. People have stopped the projects they were doing since the time the dollar depreciated badly. All projects halted and they are channeling their money into something different in their host countries. Building materials businesses have had sales dropped significantly and a lot of artisans are unemployed now . You should have anticipated this swift response from citizens who command the dollar before you depreciated it to that level . We warned you of the consequences.

Poor cocoa farmers! We wish we had the choice which you guys in the diaspora have! This year alone, "by day" labour rates have jumped by 20% @ between ghc80 to ghc100. We can't tell the already scarce labourers that Maamah says we have moved from the weak Ghana cedi to the strong Tarzan cedi and therefore, we will pay less. The labourers have to go to market and pay the ever increasing prices! And we don't have the luxury of refusing to sell cocoa to Maamah for peanuts. We are the same long suffering poor farmers whose labour went to pay for the free and pointless education (or the lack of it) for the likes of Maamah and his henchmen while our children, nieces and nephews went without education. Enough is enough.
Now is the time for us to have a strong union of cocoa farmers. Unfortunately, most of us are very poor and have no formal education.
The governor hasn't seen anything yet. He should wait and see more cocoa lands become galamsey sites. At this stage, and with all my education, I will happily give up my 90 acre cocoa farm for galamsey. And I know I'm not alone.

Why do we always have a negative view of the private sector. Consider also that when opposing politicians false run down the economy and country the perception of risk is heighten so much that the Ghanaian diaspora don't consider their country as a safe for investment and savings. It is also note worthy that most people facing threats of deportation and the risk of losing their jobs or withdrawal permanent residence will not be in a position to remit. So it may not necessarily be a hike in irregularities but a drying of the sources. Whatever assessment must be comprehensive enough to included income security, migrant status disruptions and risks, as well as rising cost of living and even the appreciation of the cedi despite rising cost of living, meaning remittance can buy less than before

The answer is simple. I used to send about £120 per month to support my family in Ghana before the cedi appreciated. But now I have to top it up by £45 for them to get the same amount of cedis because prices of goods have not been reduced across board to warrant the continuation of sending £120 per month.

Secondly, I have temporarily suspended sending money for projects in Ghana in anticipation that the pound sterling will appreciate as prices of items have not been significantly reduced in line with the appreciation of the cedi.

To curb the situation I think the Bank of Ghana needs to allow the cedi to find its own level.

Bag of rice went from G120 to G80.
Container of oil went from G940 to G600.

Cement prices stayed the same. We have plans to build 40 houses/ condos, but I won't invest a cedi into building until cement prices drop.

Dear Governor, Ghanaians are complaining that despite the recent appreciation of the Cedi prices in Ghana are not getting lower; in some cases they are even going up. Consequently people in the diaspora have found quite a legitimate way of sending money to Ghana without going through your prescribed system. They get much more for their dollars and sterling than your fixed rates. So you fix the rate Sir Allah Bar dealers get the dosh. Simple.

Bread that I used to buy for 27ghs before January now sells at 30ghs, a cob of roasted corn which used to be 2 or 3 Gh’s last year now sells at 4 or 5ghs and you want me to clap for you? It is always said that we should not go against our instincts; I did and voted next and here we are, talk, talk and talk. I can’t trust any party in Ghana anymore.
